I was thinking about going into massage therapy. do they make good money? I want to finish my degree in psychology first, will a bachelors degree allow me to make more money when I become a massage therapist? :)
also any personal stories from registered massage therapists is greatly appreciated!! thanks so much!Do massage therapists make good money?
it all depends on where you decide to take you career once you finish school and it also depends on where you live and what your area can afford.
beacause of the dip in our economy, we've all heard how luxury items are no longer in demand. well, i think thats a crock of s**t! just look in anyones home and you'll see the newest flat screen tvs, the best computers and the latest cell phone. so although massage is considered a luxury, people still want it because it not only feels good but is also good for you.
spa massage therapists can make good money because of the higher cost of the massage, but spas are showing a decline in clients because of the high price. smaller massage clinics charge less so you wouldn't make as much, but clients are more abundant because they are getting a better deal. finally, most massage therapists start their own business. i find that the idea of massaging from your house is nice (no overhead), but do you REALLY want strangers to be coming in and out of your home? I massage from my house but only family, friends and long time clients.
so here is an example of what i just said (all based on my own experience since I work parttime at a spa, a massage clinic, from home and from my own business). these amounts are based on a 1 hour massage and i'm not factoring tips because those can be hit or miss. and note, most places only pay commission, which means no client = no pay.
at the spa i make $30/massage, but on a 6 hour shift i only have 3 clients. i made $90 for 6 hours.
at the massage clinic i make $20/massage, but i'm fully booked. i made $120 for 6 hours.
at home i charge $70/massage but only do 1 client a week. i like to keep, work at work and home as my sanctuary.
at my business (i rent space in a gym), i charge $70/massage but i have a lot of expenses. it still is worth my while and i make good money with my own business. i can work as much as i want or as little. i don't have to stay there if i have no clients.
as for your degree, it's a bit irrelevant. a business degree would have helped if you were to start your own business, but i'm not sure how psych will help. perhaps being able to read your clients better and know what they want?
i have a bachelors in hospitality and business and this has helped me in managing my company.
anyways, best of luck and sorry this was such a long answer. :o)Do massage therapists make good money?
