What supplies does a beginning massage therapist need?

Can you recommend a type of portable massage table? What features are important to look for? What other equipment or supplies does a beginning massage therapist need? What supplies does a beginning massage therapist need?
I think a lot depends on where you plan on working, whether you will be starting out on your own or working for someone else. If you are employed by someone you really don't need any supplies. Many places will ';hire'; you as an independent contractor and they will usually provide a table for you and sometimes lotions/oils but some places don't. If you are going out on your own then you are responsible for providing all your own supplies. When I attended massage school we were given the One table by Oakworks and everyone loved it because it was very comfortable. Make sure you check for the weight limit on the table. If you are planning to travel around with your table make sure it isn't too heavy unless you are going to get a cart for it

Of course you will need lotions and oils, you should purchase unscented (and hypoallergenic if you can afford it) and you can experiment with different (light) scents if your clients have preferences. If you have the money for it, a hot towel cabbie is nice for heating and keeping towels hot, this relaxes the muscles before and after the massage and can also be used if you will be doing spa treatments. However, if a cabbie is not within your budget right now you can use a crockpot to heat up towels also. Don't know if you will be doing hot stone massage then you will also need the stones and a heater. You could also get a massage chair if you are interested in doing seated massage. I have a couple of tennis balls I use for trigger points and I seat on a exercise ball sometimes if I have to work on one area for a long time.

If you are just starting out and want a table on a budget you can check craigslist for a used one. That and lotions and or oils and of course your hands are really all the supplies you need to start once you complete your training. Best of luck to you and have fun. What supplies does a beginning massage therapist need?
First of all - a good massage training program (generally 500-1100 hours) and whatever licenses your city or state requires. I would also recommend membership in one of the National Professional Massage Organizations (AMTA or ABMP). I joined AMTA, I have friends in both.

Portable Massage Tables - I like wood and use Oakworks as my supplier for the table and chair. I had considered Custom Craftworks but they were more expensive than I wanted to spend. I also own a Stronglight Table - it's not as nice but I spent a fifth as much to buy it.

If you're traveling a lot - get a lighter table. If you plan to set up in one place you can splurge on a wider table and thicker padding.

Other Stuff: CD Player, Relaxing Music, cell phone, business cards, lubricant of choice (I prefer viscous cream for slower and deeper work), massage sheets, intake forms, SOAP Note forms, and a receipt book.
It is important to get a table with a lifetime warranty if you are planning on setting up your own business. If you just need a table for massage school get a cheap one through costco.

You don't really need much else. Sheets, pillows, lotions, oils, blanket or table warmer.
Yeah, take a look on craiglist.

The new Earthlight model is nice for the money (around 300)

and whatever you do, dont get background music that has water (waves, rain, etc) in the background - it makes people have to pee, and then they dont enjoy the massage.
A suitable two or three year course in massage therapy. Which will cover all you need to know about the practice side of things. As well as the business side.
TRAINING WILL GIVE YOU WHAT YOU NEED

What is the fastest way to become a massage therapist if you already have studied anatomy and physiology?

I'm looking to learn massage therapy and have seen people get their licenses very quickly. I have not been able to ask them how they did it because they quickly stop working at the job I know them from. So I didn't have a chance to ask. What is the fastest way to become a massage therapist if you already have studied anatomy and physiology?
You can't really unless you live in a state that does not require professional licensing. Most require that you have at least 500 hours of training. Many schools offer much more training than that so you could see if you can take the test when you fulfill the requirements or you could find a school that just offers the basics. You have to find out what is required in your state/city etc as far as licensing.

some schools may also let you test out of taking anatomy and physiology and just take the massage portion and other things that are required.

If you live in an unlicensed state you will be better off taking classes even though it isn't required so that you will be better off in creating your business or finding a job.

You can also start a massage business without being a massage therapist and hire people who are. What is the fastest way to become a massage therapist if you already have studied anatomy and physiology?
Having A%26amp;P is great! But it isn't enough. I finished school in 9 months. Your best bet is to find a reputable massage therapy school in your area and take classes from them. You also get your massage table from them, too, added into the price of your courses. You should be able to test out or have your A%26amp;P credits transfer, shortening your classwork by around 2 months. Depending upon your state, you may not need to go to school, but over 35 states now require some type of schooling and a certificate to prove it.

At the time I went to school, my state did not require any type of schooling, but it was often regulated on the local level. I choose to go to school anyway to get the table a bit more professional experience. I am glad I did because now my state does require a certificate from a school.
Montana School of Massage has four seperate class start dates. Sept. Day Class M-F 9am-1pm 7 months

Oct. Evening M-TH 5:30-9:30pm 10months

Feb. Day days and hours are the same as Sept.

Summer Intensive M-F 9am-6pm with graduation in 4 months.

Depending on which class you took, you will have 600-650 hours completed anywhere from 4 to 10 months.

If you already have A %26amp; P we would have you test out of that by taking our final exam. If you passed, you would not be required to take that course.

After receiving you certificate of completetion, you would be eligible to take the National Certification Exam.
I studied A%26amp;P while getting my AA at a community college. Then I went to Allied College in St. Louis for the Massage Therapy Certificate program. I still had to do all the A%26amp;P stuff because we did it while we were learning all the different massage techniques, but it was a good thing because it kept me fresh and I got to see how massage effected the body systems. The certificate program took 11 months to complete and around $10,000 tuition, but I think their tuition has just gone up a little.
No idea
Check with a local massage therapist school. They should be able to tell you. If you don't know of one, just look online.

  • What do Massage therapist learn to strengthen there hands?

They work all day, what keeps their hands from getting tired and sore? What do Massage therapist learn to strengthen there hands?
our hands do get tired and sore.

that just comes with the territory. but good body mechanics go a long way to help keep the stress on our bodies to a minimum. leaning into the technique and using our own body weight instead of trying to use the arm and shoulder strength is a must. keeping the joints stacked, in line, will help reduce wear-and-tare on the joints in the hands and arms. regular stretching of the wrists helps reduce the risk of carpel tunnel syndrome as well. What do Massage therapist learn to strengthen there hands?
Stretching of your arms and fingers will help. Lifting weights (not too heavy) on each arms to activate your biceps. Stretch your arms to the back to strethen your triceps. Wriggle your fingers to loosen tension around your knuckles. At the end of work, soak hands in cold milk with few drops of pure lavender essential oil to relax the any soreness and tiredness. Massaging is not about using just your hands. It's about using your full body-weight so to prevent lesser injuries on localised areas such as fingers and knees.
i make sure to use quite a bit of forearms and elbows as well, as to alleviate any stress on my hands and thumbs especially...to be honest, a manicure is about the only self help i use to heal my hands..keep my nails, short and clean, soft and they do a lot of hand massage during it, which feels incredible because a self massage just doesn't feel the same..i don't do any exercises or anything like that..massaging six or seven people a day is enough exercise for my hands... :) but that's just me personally..i love my job and i wouldn't have it any other way...
In Oriental medical school, students learn a medical form of massage called tui-na. They are instructed to take a bag of rice and use the different techniques on the bag of rice until it was rice flour to strengthen their hands.
Self massage is great, as well as receiving massage from others.

I use a lot of the force from my thighs and positioning, posture and that helps. As well as elbows and knuckles in the place of finger tips preserves the hands.

But somedays, my hands are sore after all of that.

Do massage therapist get horny wile performing a massage on somebody?

I know people getting the massage can, so what about the therapist, do you secretly get arouse, specially for men therapist, it's ok to tell the truth it's a normal reaction i think.

But i'd really like to know what male therapist think.Do massage therapist get horny wile performing a massage on somebody?
    You wish.

Don't forget that they do it for a living.

Perhaps the first few times they did, but I expect that after a while it just becomes totally routine....

And not only that, but giving the massage for an extended period of time really makes the wrists ache.

So honestly... I doubt it.Do massage therapist get horny wile performing a massage on somebody?
I'm not a therapist, but I am a male and I like to give massages. I will agree, I think it's the normal reaction so long as you're attracted to the person you're massaging.
I'm a female massaget therapist and I never get ';horny'; because this is my career and when I'm giving a massage, the last thing on my mind is sex.

If a male therapist DOES get aroused in any way while performing a massage, I sincerely hope he quits because he's in the wrong line of work.
it depends if the girl has beautiful lookin boobs

What are some good advertising ideas for a massage therapist?

My girlfriend is a licensed massage therapist and just started her own business. She needs advise on advertising. What are some tips she could use? What should she do?What are some good advertising ideas for a massage therapist?
    Suggestions:

    1. She should join an online forum for massage therapists she can pick up a lot of ideas there. (e.g. www.massage.meetup.com and choose her location from there)

    2. She should also join industry associations or log into their websites so she can subscribe to their newsletters and feeds. (e.g. AMTA, NCMTCB, etc.)

    Hope this helps a little.

  • What qualities do you consider when choosing a massage therapist?

Also, what qualities help you in deciding to stick with one therapist?

Thank you! What qualities do you consider when choosing a massage therapist?
The first therapist I went to wanted to teach me how to heal myself. All I wanted to do was lie there. The second therapist suggests things I can do, but all I have to do is lie there. She does what I ask her to do (not that - even though I may wish it). She uses her elbows to apply extreme pressure and makes sure she doesn't overdo it unless I have requested a deep massage for sports recovery. Not only that, she has a great personality and sense of humour. What qualities do you consider when choosing a massage therapist?

Their experience and manner while doing the massage, and if they did a good job, then I'll go back

Can you do a massage therapist program online?

I am studying to be an early childhood education teacher.

But I have been told that most teachers have a side career too because teachers are still underpaid.

I am debating whether I want to be a child psychologist on the side.

I am also planning on earning a massage therapy license to practice massage on the side. Can you do a massage therapy program online? Do you have to attend school in person? Are online massage therapy classes available? Can I earn my massage therapy training and license online?I am hearing about so many programs offering online education. Can you do a massage therapist program online?
I would think that would be difficult (except for some of the lecture courses) as where I taught the students did actual massages (that would be hard to do online)Can you do a massage therapist program online?
In order to get licensed you're gonna need hands on training which requires actually going to class for that. Massage therapy school requires attendance since it is a 'clockhour' program. However, after you get your license, you will need to maintain it with continuing education which you CAN do online, if you choose. In Illinois, we have to do 24 CEUs every 2 yrs and only 12 CEUs can be earned online and the others need to be earned in class.

Do you tip a massage therapist if you have a gift certificate?

I've never been before and my husband bought me a two hour massage and facial. What do I expect? I really don't feel comfortable with being completely undressed.Do you tip a massage therapist if you have a gift certificate?
I have been a Massage Therapist for 12 years....

I do get alot of tips...about 98% of the time and usually between 15-25%.

Tips are nice, but I realize that sometimes a client has a giftcard from a friend that thought s/he deserved a special treat and they really can't currently even afford a massage or the tip.... I am never offended, I am just glad they could experience a nice event.

As for undressing.... I always say ';undress to your comfort level'; and will work around whatever the client decided to do.... even the more shy clients will start to undress more on next visits.

Proper draping of sheets/blankets to keep continuous coverage of breast area and genitalia is mandatory from the state I work in as well as my own personal preference....LOL....

Always remember... this is your time, we are at your service....you are the boss !!Do you tip a massage therapist if you have a gift certificate?
You tip BOTH the massage therapist AND esthetician. 15%-20% is average.

Therapists are very professional and there are state board required way to drape the body when getting a massage. As for a facial you should take your robe off as well because a neck/shoulder massage is part of a facial. The sheets will be tucked right under your underarms.

Have you made your appointment yet? You can request a female massage therapist if that makes you more comfortable as well.
    Oh, absolutely. :)

I'm not sure how much your services cost, but I'd throw her a $20 at least. I suppose it depends on where you live too.

EDIT: And as for being completely undressed, it's not all that bad. Places like that are skilled in not leaving you feeling ';vulnerable'; and mostly covered up with towels and such. Just relax and enjoy yourself. You obviously deserve it otherwise your hubby wouldn't have given you this awesome gift!
DEFINITELY. I always treat gift certificates the same as cash, so tips are a go (normally 20% of the total cost)!

And the whole getting undressed thing, its really not that awkward. The people are professionals so they should deal with it in a very mature way. If you are at any time uncomfortable, say something immediately.
always leave a tip no matter what the cost of your services are.

just be cool being naked, these are professional therapists so they are so used to that. maybe, if you inform the MT that this is your first session she will give you some comforting words for you not to get uneasy.enjoy the session, it will definitely relax you inside %26amp; out.

    good luck
You always tip a massage therapist gift card or not, usually 20.00

How popular is a massage therapist around pregnant women?

I heard leg cramps are bad during pregnancy how many of you women out there like or need a massage therapist during this time? Prefer answer's from people experiencing this. How popular is a massage therapist around pregnant women?
I had to go to massage therapy while pregnant because of a neck injury giving me migraines and my doctor only wanted to give me pain killers for a short time. It helped IMMENSELY. I was NOT in my 3rd trimester when I had my massages done and had no problems. How popular is a massage therapist around pregnant women?
I am a massage therapist. We get women in their 3rd trimester. That is the perfect time to massage. a pregnant women before that can cause harm to the mom and the baby. That is why we only take 3rd trimester clients. It helps with the muscles and also can help in courage labor to start late in the pregnancy.
Massage is GREAT during pregnancy. During all parts. You can get a massage during any trimester unless you have had complications, just ask your doctor. Just go to someone who is certified in prenatal massage or has experience with pregnant clients, your doctor may know of someone or search the internet. If that is not an option for you then there are plenty of books (Massage During Pregnancy- Bette Waters) out there where you can teach your partner or a friend to give a great massage for less. I never had leg cramps and I stood a lot of the day MASSAGING others. I have had a lot of women over the years though that loved having there legs massaged. Just make sure you do not have any blood clots in your legs-again ask your doctor.
I have 2 friends, a neice and a sister in law that are massage therapists. They treat MANY pregnant women. When I was pregnant, it was awesome to have a massage. I also went to a chiropractor that kept my back in alignment.

A lot of leg cramps are due to not enough water and not enough calcium. Since you will probably have heartburn, TUMS are wonderful and are a great source of calcium.

How much does a massage therapist make a year?

I would like to know how much money a starting/mid career massage therapist makes annually--just by working in a regular spa, nothing fancy yet. Also, if you know of any online colleges that are not too expensive that offer this degree, could you please include links? Thanks in advance. How much does a massage therapist make a year?
$15 an hour and working maybe 30 hours tops is entry level - well that's about $20,000 a year and it is probably less because when you don't have clients you only get paid minimum wage. In a few years you could probably work your way up to $25 an hour.

Most massage therapists start their own business. How much does a massage therapist make a year?
According to government surveys, average hourly earnings, including gratuities, were $16.06 in May 2006. The middle 50% earned between $10.98 and $24.22. The lowest 10% earned less than $7.48, and the highest 10% earned more than $33.83. Generally, massage therapists earn 15 to 20 percent of their income as gratuities. For those who work in a hospital or other clinical setting, however, tipping is not common.

There are no online colleges that offer massage. It is hands-on training. I don't know of any colleges or universities that offer it, only trade schools. Depending on the state/local requirements it takes from 6 months to 1 1/2 years to complete.

    Advice from massage therapists?

i am currently attending school to become a massage therapist. I dont really want to do ';medical massage';, Id rather do spa-like stuff. Any of you guys do this type of work and are you sucessful? i am attending PCI, and i wonder if i will be able to get a good job.Advice from massage therapists?
I am a massage therapist and have a very successful practice. My office is set up to be very spa like and I incorporate spa treatments into my work. To make good money in the massage industry, it is really best to have your own business. Most massage jobs do not pay that well. It is okay to work at a day spa when you first graduate but I wouldn't work for someone for longer than a year or two. You should start to learn everything you can about marketing now because it is really important to have a successful practice. I have written a really good article about marketing your massage business at www.alternativehealthbusiness.com/low-co鈥? Massage is a really great business and you have a lot to look forward to. • To massage therapists out there -- when you're massaging someone ...?

I just got a massage %26amp; I was embarrassed about my pubic hair, and she kept spreading my legs open and stretching them all different directions ... is that normal?!

What do you think about when you're giving a massage? Are you using your senses and paying attention to your fingers and where they are touching, or staring at the person's face when they are laying down right side up ... or observing their weight or what?

come on, what are you really looking at.

i'm curious. lol weird question id appreciate your answers!

i was just wondering this while getting the massageTo massage therapists out there -- when you're massaging someone ...?
Yup, as a person giving the massage on the legs usually does move them that way - about the only way to work the legs is to extend them outward and open. What do we see - well all of you -like your lover would, but there is not need to be ashamed. We have seen it all, from massive pubic hair growth to completely hairless and tattoos and body piercings. I can give you more details in answer to your questions, but you'd better email me, I don't want to violate guidelines here in the open forum. To massage therapists out there -- when you're massaging someone ...?
Pubic hair is very erotic. It adds a lot of mystery and intrigue. A lot of guys love to play with a woman's pubic hair - run their fingers through it... rub their nose on it...

Fully shaven looks very unnatural..... it exposes things and make a woman look like a little girl...

A lot of marketing pressure has made it a trend for women to use a lot of different ways to get rid of pubic hair... Some of these are actually very unhealthy... You could absorb a lot of chemicals in the process...

At some point, the trend is going to reverse and women will return to leaving their pubic hair natural or just trimming it lightly... I think that trend has already started... Compared to about 5 years ago, fewer women are concerned about keeping it fully shaved now.
i know you make not like this answer yes it is normal

Massage therapy: How do you make the most money working as a massage therapist?

I am becoming a massage therapist. When I begin working how can I make the most money? Should I rent out a room or work directly for a company and get paid through them? Or some other way I might not know about. Thanks for the advice in advance.Massage therapy: How do you make the most money working as a massage therapist?
    It depends on the scenario.

If you go out on your own, the main issue is going to be your overhead. If you have enough of a clientele that you've picked up along the way you should be fine, but you will be paying out quite a bit.

I considered it, but knew that I wouldn't be making enough money to survive.

If you work for someone else (as I have chosen to do), you won't be making as much an hour, but you won't have to pay out for bills, supplies, insurance, etc.

All I can say is that you should consider all your options and figure out what way works best and makes the most sense for you.Massage therapy: How do you make the most money working as a massage therapist?
Start your own business. Rent an office and set it up. Create a business plan and a website and do everything you can to get clients. Working for someone else you usually can't make much.

Can I start working as a massage therapist?

Could I be a successful male massage therapist if I only work from my apartment? Would I get clients?

I'm worried that people will get the wrong idea. I'm planning on going to massage school to become a certified massage therapist in several styles. I would love for this to work. I want to help people feel better and I would get a personal satisfaction in doing so. I'm having trouble figuring out what to do with my life and this seems like a nice idea. Just wondering if I could pull it off and make a decent living off of it.Could I be a successful male massage therapist if I only work from my apartment? Would I get clients?
A male massagist working from your own home? People will think you're giving people more than just massages.Could I be a successful male massage therapist if I only work from my apartment? Would I get clients?
I actually prefer a massage in the masseur's home, but then I am a man and don't have the issues that a woman would have. Word of mouth is best way to build up a clientele; like others have said, try to establish urself with a salon, spa, chiropractor. And offer to go to the client's home Be flex too

You can make a decent living as a massotherapist. I wouldn't recommend doing it from your apartment though. It seems a little shady and I think most would be uncomfortable in the atmosphere. You also open yourself up to lawsuits. Not saying this would happen but it could. What you could do is open a small office, build a strong clientle then move to your business to your apartment. This way they'd already have a business relationship with you and you'd know who your letting into your private space!
    you'd have my vote...jk

put your ads out there maybe
The majority of people who get massages are women. As a female I would be uncomfortable not because your a man but being alone at your house. I wouldn't put myself in that situation and when you market it, it may come up weird to others. What about making house calls instead? Or even have a RV set up like a massage room?
Yes I think you can be successful, if you are good.

I've been a massage therapist for 2 decades and it can be done if you are flexible.

I have a portable table, so I can also go to clients.

I only work on people in my apt if I know them.

The other alternative is, there maybe some space in your city that rents out massage rooms by the hour. There are a few in my city, but I'm in NYC so we have everything here.

In order to establish yourself, you might consider working at a local Spa. or for a chiropractor or dentist. The latter 2 have incorporated using massage therapists from time to time.

You could even do it part time ... while you're building your own clientel. It would also build your confidence in your work.

Also, included in your schooling is advice on the way to set up your practice.

If this is something you are passinate about, you will find a way to be successful.

    Much good luck to you.
Hmmmmmm, a male massage therapist offering his services from home??? Granted, this would cut down on your business expenses (no commercial rent); however, I don't see that idea flying as a successful business venture. Massage clients need to feel safe and be somewhere quiet, soothing and relaxing.

A masseuse I visit occasionally subleases her space from a physiotherapist. Therefore, the two practices are related and her rent is far cheaper than she would likely pay to her own landlord. This might be something you could think about as well. As for making a decent living? Get yourself a gig with a pro athlete or team ... you'll be set!

How much should you tip your massage therapist? Is there some standard for it?

I'm getting a $65.00 maternity massage today, what's a baseline tip?How much should you tip your massage therapist? Is there some standard for it?
Depends on the venue. Often, therapists working at high end spas work on a smaller scale commission, with the balance of their income coming from tips. Therapists working in smaller settings may be getting a higher base commission assuming their tips are not as substantial. If the massage is in a doctor's office, they may even have a no tip policy. In any case, I'm sure you'd be fine with with something around $10. If you want more assurance, call the place beforehand and ask what their tipping policy is. Don't be afraid to do so. As a therapist, tipping is one of the most often asked questions from my new clients. With so many types and venues of masssage, it's no wonder that people are confused. How much should you tip your massage therapist? Is there some standard for it?
Same as spa - 15% - 20%. In your case $10 - $13 assuming service is acceptable, of course.
15 to 20%, the same as a restaurant.

What are prerequisites to be a massage therapist?

I want to be a massage therapist and don't know if there are any prerequisites to take the program at a college. What are prerequisites to be a massage therapist?
At the school I attended the only Pre-req was to take an introduction course to the program. You'll have to contact the college you have in mind to see if they have any requirements. You will at least need to have graduated high school or have a ged. You will also need to take their placement tests and score high enough to be allowed to take the classes you need for the program.

Even if your program does not require taking an anatomy and physiology class (usually known as A%26amp;P) you should take it. People may tell you it is too difficult or that you dont need it, but you absolutely DO. It is really not that hard and the test that you will have to pass for National Certification has a large portion of anatomy questions. People who have had anatomy have an easier time learning what they need for the test.

Make sure to ask lots of questions about the program, find out what their success rate is, how they offer hands on training, how long it takes to complete etc. Make sure you are getting enough training so you will be able to meet your state's requirments to practice massage therapy as well as to feel comfortable working on clients. It's your future, make sure you are prepared! What are prerequisites to be a massage therapist?
Usually the pre-reqs are nothing more than things like: having experienced a professional massage, being emotionally and physically capable of giving a massage, etc.

However it is always a HUGE help if you already have prior experience in anatomy/phisiology or any other medical courses. These will help you fly through both the school's tests and and the national exams.

Being a massage therapist is very rewarding and I know you will enjoy it.

  • I am a massage therapist how should I go about getting clients?

I have tried handing out cards and putting up filers. I have a degree in Michigan and I am planning on getting certifed in the USA but so far I am haveing trouble getting people to come see me what should I do?I am a massage therapist how should I go about getting clients?
Someone else on Yahoo recently asked a similar question and my response would be the same...

Consider speaking on massage. As a former massage therapist, I used to offer programs on ';self help'; massage. In other words, I would teach a combination of bodywork movements done by the client or with the help of a partner. This includes the use of hands, stretching, and commercial or homemade massage tools. Such programs focus on the science of massage; in other words, the reasons why specific movements benefit the body or a health condition. Whereas, the art lies in the personality and passion that blend each movement together into the dance that comes from a professional massage.

Besides the potential for direct income from public speaking, there are other professional benefits. Public speaking provides name recognition. It sets you above the competition. Even if the presentation is free, when an organization hires you to speak, it conveys a sense of endorsement. After all, as a speaker on massage, you must be a great massage therapist!

Public speaking puts you in front of potential massage clients. Because they come to your program for the opportunity to learn, their natural sales resistance is lowered. Compare self-help massage programs to a first aid course. You learn to treat minor ailments, but still go to the doctor for acute problems and a periodic check-up. Since nothing can replace a professional massage, the audience will automatically think of you when seeking a personal therapist.

Promoting yourself as a personal consultant is a logical extension to public speaking. There were certain techniques that I did not teach in my programs because it would have been almost impossible to demonstrate in a group setting. However, I easily taught these techniques to one or two people who would pay for my time as a consultant.

Public speaking allows you to market other products and services. Let鈥檚 say you are affiliated with a spa. It should be relatively easy to weave discussion of these spa services into your massage program. But what if you are an independent practitioner? Using the spa example, find one locally who would help cover your normal speaking fees in return for mentioning their spa services and providing marketing materials during the program. This allows you to charge lower speaking fees, while getting in front of potential massage clients.

The marketing value of a presentation extends beyond the program itself. Most organizations hosting your presentation will publicize the event. Even people who do not attend might read the information or hear about you from other attendees.I am a massage therapist how should I go about getting clients?
by word of mouth or putting an ad on the newsapper, did u try sticking the flier on people cars, how about advertising on the internet. good luck with your business.
put an ad in the paper, offer a free coupon. advertising is the answer. then word of mouth will spread and ur business will pick up.
what about putting an ad in the local paper and by telling people you know and telling your family memebers that way they tell people they know. good luck!
See if you can make an arrangement with a mall to set up in a kiosk. This will accomplish two purposes 1)It will advertise your business and probably help you build a clientele immediately 2) It will discourage certain people from thinking that they are going to get something in addition to a massage.

You sound like a person with a professional attitude who will probably be successful.
You should find a local chiropractor who owns a professional building or other parcels of office space and rent from him. Many of his patients will be looking for therapeutic massage as an adjunct to their rehab. Being next door, it is highly likely they will naturally gravitate toward you. If you are good (and you better be good or it will backfire on you), the chiro might mention your name to patients.

How much do massage therapist really make at a chiropractors office?

i meet this cutie girl and she said that she makes 20 dollars an hour. I don't know if its full time or not. is this bs or what. please help clarify this for me. How much do massage therapist really make at a chiropractors office?
When I worked in a chiro office, I was paid 60% of the office visit. This would usually come to about $35.00 -40.00.

Your cutie is probably not as experienced as I, therefore counting for the lower pay.

Or it could be that she is being paid for time not spent on patients.

Either way, she is making good money.

I have found that tips are more fluid in a spa or clinic setting than in a Chiro office. How much do massage therapist really make at a chiropractors office?
In florida, the pay scale at a chiropractor office is about $20/hr. Most chiros don't have enough work to keep a massage therapist busy full time. Not all people want or can afford the massage in addition to the adjustment.
i recently just finished my 3 quarter in massage therapy school. all massage therapists are licensed and would be making $40-100 dollars and hour depending on what school they graduated from and if they are independent massage therapists.

How much to tip a massage therapist when I go to her home?

My massage therapist quit the spa she used to work for, and now takes clients in her home.

I don't mind tipping at a spa, because she probably only gets an hourly rate and most of the cost of the massage goes towards the facility's rent/electricity/supplies, etc.

My question is: If I am going to her house for a massage, how much (if any) do I tip? She gets 100% of my fee, so is a tip necessary? How much to tip a massage therapist when I go to her home?
According to the article cited below:

Do not tip a massage therapist who works for himself and makes house calls or owns the massage center.

Have a polite day.How much to tip a massage therapist when I go to her home?
While she is getting the whole fee - a good percentage of that goes towards business expenses. Bills, bookkeeping, advertising, repairing/replacing equipment, linens, oils. She'll also have to save some each month for taxes at the end of the year since they're not deducted.

That said as a Massage Therapist myself, who is self employed through a Clinic - tips are never ever expected or requested - however, always appreciated. Do what makes the most sense to you, and what you're most comfortable with.
The massage therapist is probably at least expecting the same amount that you paid for her services while working at the spa. If, however, her fees are dramatically lower, and/or your massage experience has dramatically decreased because she is no longer in the spa setting, you should feel comfortable with offering the same pay for what may be the same service; just a different location. Try not to look at it as a Fee + Tip. Pay a set amount for what you think the new service and location is worth compared to what you were paying before.
I am a massage therapist and I also take clients in my home.

I do get 100 percent of the fee but there is alot of labor work using the body. a tip is not required but it is appreciated and we are providing a service. 10-15 dollars is acceptable
In your case I don't think a tip is necessary. If it's an exceptionally good massage, you could give her a 20% tip, but I don't think it would be expected or required.
    Tip 10% to be polite.

Yes, you have to attend a massage school but you have to know what are the rules and regulations for the State that you would like to practice. I don't think the military hires massage therapists. And I say that because I see a lot of military as clients and if the military had massage available for them, they certainly wouldn't be coming to me and paying $70 an hour. You can market yourself to servicemembers; they need massage as much as anyone else, if not more so.

  • Any tips on how a massage therapist can make decent money?

I have a friend who is a massage therapist. He is really struggling. Most of the places where he can find work just take most of the money. Any ideas?Any tips on how a massage therapist can make decent money?
Any place where you work for someone else, they will take most of the money. The reason is not always greed, but the business owners may value expenses of location, property upkeep, marketing and advertising over the expenses that they think a massage therapist deserves. It just becomes simple economics. Figure out a way to keep your expenses as low as possible, and your revenue as high as possible to create a decent profit margin. Many massage therapists find this by becoming mobile with a chair and a table. Initially, you will need to sacrifice some of your perfect scenario elements just so you can start in the right direction. Your start-up cost is relatively low, and you will have no overhead (so to speak) because you are not locked into rent or utilities. Your operating cost of supplies and/or fuel for transportation may be your biggest ongoing expense. Also, if becoming your own business person is the direction you want to go, then legitimize yourself by developing a professional business name and a logo. Find cheap ways to print business cards, set a fair price, then discount 15-25% for package deals (5 sessions or more). This will get the ball rolling. And most important. Take care of your customers! Arrive on time, don't change your appoinments with them unnecessarily and listen to what they are looking for in a massage session. Set some boundaries, but keep this consistent with them. Inconsistency is what drives people away from many service driven businesses. When people begin to ask if you have an office, then you will want to consider finding a place that rents a room. You should not need to pay more than 50% for the room rental. Be patient, but be persistent. If you need to supplement income through a full-time or part-time job, then do it. Give yourself time to build up clientele before relying on your massage income to support you full-time.

Best wishes.Any tips on how a massage therapist can make decent money?
There are an awful lot of massage therapist out there, and the best thing that your friend can do is differentiate himself in the market with advanced training in areas of healing that other massage therapists may not be addressing in his market like acupressure, pregnancy massage, or gem therapy. Not all massage therapists have business skill, and whether your friend likes it or not, he has a small business. Also, if he/she gets out there and knocks on corporate doors, you can find times when corporations treat employees to short massages (a chair is needed). These employees can become long-term clients. Health fairs and festivals are another great place to find clients by starting with a 15 minute chair massage followed up with a call. No doubt, it is work building a practice with so much competition, but once you have laid hands on someone, they will be more responsive.
The only way i've found to make decent money is to work for yourself. If your friend can get hold of all the equipment and work as a mobile therapist or rent a space they'll make more than working for someone. If he approaches naturopaths, chiropractors, gyms etc to find a space then that could work. Unfortunately massage therapists aren't going to make a million. When i did my training the first thing they said was that if your looking to make a lot of money... your in the wrong trade... And you have to find the healthy balance of working enough to make money and not working too much so you burn out and theeeeen your stuffed. And it is sooooo important for your friend to find another therapist and do swaps. If you are doing massage full time you need to get massages regularly.
Even if you have a job in massage you still need to know how to get and keep clients.

There are tons on things one needs to do to be successful in the massage profession as in any other profession beginning with changing your core beliefs about yourself.

You also have to know that it is about making money.

Read and learn anything and everything about marketing and business.

There are high paying job opportunities out there where you can make $45 an hour as a subcontractor but you have to know how to find them or create them.
It's tough everywhere for a LMT.

It sounds like your buddy is self employed and that is really tough. Word of mouth is the best way to get your name out there. Make business cards and had them out, everywhere! Promote yourself! Spas have been cutting back their business, 'cause the business that was there last year isn't here.

What is the Education difference between a Massage Therapist and a Physical Therapist?

I understand that a Massage and Physical therapist are two different occupations, but what degrees do you go through that are different for each? I've looked it up, and it says for a Massage Therapist, all you need is a certificate/degree in Massage work. I find that hard to believe, and was wondering if there was something that the internet lacked to tell me?What is the Education difference between a Massage Therapist and a Physical Therapist?
It is true, you only need a certificate to become a massage therapist. Yet, the job market for this is very poor and your ability to get regular income and benefits is limited.

Physical therapy takes at least a master's degree and most programs are now doctoral. But to counterpoint one of the above posts, it's a DPT, not a PhD and typically takes 6-7 years....very rarely 8. Physical therapy is a true professional and the job market, earning potential and ability to secure benefits is very stable. What is the Education difference between a Massage Therapist and a Physical Therapist?
You can become a masseuse by completing a series of courses at a massage school. Once you get your license, you can give people massages at spas and salons, etc., which make them feel better.

One of my relatives receives therapeutic massage for lymphedema. She sees a physical therapist who is also certified in massage therapy. This physical therapist works in a hospital setting and gets all of her patients by referral from vascular surgeons. The kind of medical massage therapy that she provides is intended to improve circulation and reduce the possibility of blood clots in patients with lymphedema.
Your search results are correct. I refuse to use the term ';therapist'; for anyone who massages, because true therapists have earned at least a master's degree.

The national standard for massage PRACTITIONERS is 500 hours of trade school which takes 6 months. Every state has a different standard, though. New York requires 1,500 hours.

Physical therapists have at least a master's degree, which takes SIX years, not four. Some states now require a doctorate, which takes around EIGHT years.

If you want a respected, legitimate career, choose physical therapy.
You only need to go to a 6 month to one year program to be a massage therapist. A Physical therapist goes to college for 4 years. You can take much more training as a massage therapist that will give you skills beyond a PT even after you become licensed as a massage therapist if you want to or you can just do massage.

I was looking to go to school for massage but I wanted a little feedback before paying for school and then maybe not being able to find work in what I went to school for. A little feedback would be nice. Would you also be willing to receive a massage or pay for how much they ask?Can a massage therapist make a good living in their occupation?
Yes. My friend was a CPA and was totally burned out after 12 years. She became a massage therapist and really enjoys it. And, she makes as much as she did as a CPA!Can a massage therapist make a good living in their occupation?
There is good money in it especially as insurance starts paying for it. Plus you can make tips.

The problem is that it is looked down upon in society, because some therapists are also hoe's.
I live in Ohio %26amp; a friend of mine went to school for that. She only did it for 3 years %26amp; realized it was practically useless, here in ohio anyway. somewhere like california u could probably make good $ at it. But i do know that her %26amp; a couple friends recently started doing ';spa parties'; where they go to someones house for a small group of ladies, one does mini manicures, on does massage %26amp; i think the other does mini facials. she does make good money at that.

Oh, she also now has carpal tunnel in her wrists from it.
I make a great living at it. I am an animal massage therapist. Working on animals the angles are different than working on a person, and my wrists never get sore. It is very rewarding. E-mail me through Yahoo!Answers if you would like more info.
You can make ok money but if you are willing to give happy endings you can make much more
yes.. you can work for a company and also for your self.. a friend od mine started that way and now only works from her home..

Can a NC licensed massage therapist work a second job as a cocktail waitress without jeopardizing her license?

I want to make some extra money as a cocktail waitress a few nights a week. I heard that doing so many put my massage license in jeopardy. Is there any truth to this? Can a NC licensed massage therapist work a second job as a cocktail waitress without jeopardizing her license?
Certainly. The only problem you might encounter in doing this is practicing message therapy while actually working as a cocktail waitress.

In other words, I would imagine a cocktail waitress would get a lot of opportunities to provide a few ';deep muscle'; massages while on the job... If you get my drift?

That would probably be illegal. Can a NC licensed massage therapist work a second job as a cocktail waitress without jeopardizing her license?
    Only if as a waitress

    .

She becomes a taster of the products she serves to the customer

    .

Not many people want to be near naked with a person for a massage

that can not see the eye chart on the wall as it was meant to be seen

    .

Because there is no telling what that person might grab hold of to give a work out with their fingers on

    .

A little humor here of course

    All in fun

You are not in jeopardy of loosing your license to be a masseur

As long as you are not doing massage at the bar then you do not have a problem.

Being a waitress is not a problem, if you are working at a sexually oriented business, like a strip club, then you might have a problem.

I'm not in NC, but I would contact whatever agency licensed you as a M.T. I wouldn't see any reason why having a second job should have bearing on your MT license.

You should include a picture of yourself preformin the massage, use one block colour then add black, have a clear headin and inside - many points about your massageHow to make a Massage Therapist advert tempting to people?
Well, I'm training to be an holistic therapist in a college, and in the windows of my room where I work, there is a poster of a woman who is naked, but she has a towel wrapepd around her waste and has her back to the camera, but shes turning her head towards the camera, like craning her neck, and smiling. Underneathe it all it says is ';Bring out your smile';. Its simple, but a lot of my clients who come to me for some help with anxiety have said they thought coming would help ';bring out their smile';. maybe just something simple like that :)
Please do not use this word for word, reword it in your own words.

Naming just a few benefits, a good massage, especially one that works into your muscles such as a deep tissue massage, can help alleviate back pain, enhance the immune system, exercise weak muscles, increase flexibility, lessen depression, improve circulation, and relieve tension. With all these benefits, the primary advantages can be summed up as reduced fatigue and increased energy.
You don't advertise massage. The best thing to do is figure out your target market and educate them as to the benefits of massage. You have to have a website for starters. Building a massage business is about building relationships. Get doctors and everyone to refer to you.
Let them know what sorts of massage you offer, i.e. Sports, Aromatherapy, Swedish, Indian Head etc. Also put on the prices and make sure that they know it is a legitimate business and not a knocking shop.

Put on some special offers such as a Loyalty Card scheme which will get you regular customers

I'm interested in changing careers. Could anyone tell me the pros and cons on this career? Thanks .How much does a massage therapist make an hour?
The money fluctuates depending on where you who you work for. Pro's- Schooling is cheap, able to be self employed, meet neat people, not stuck in an office.

I'm a licensed massage therapist considering starting my own business, any suggestions on where to start?

If I do start the business, it'll be a traveling massage therapy business. I'll be going to people's homes for sessions. It'll be more convenient for the patient and I wont have to rent out a building.I'm a licensed massage therapist considering starting my own business, any suggestions on where to start?
Try taking out advertisements in upscale magazines and newspapers. Maybe try negotiating with local gyms, either to help you advertise or to allow you to take some clients in the gym itself. You'll find that word of mouth is the most important form of advertising after the initial period, so do your best to make people feel valued. They'll tell their friends, trust me.I'm a licensed massage therapist considering starting my own business, any suggestions on where to start?
Traveling to peoples homes can be risky and hard work slepping tables around upstairs and trying to get them into rooms with too much furniture. Set up some rules like don't go to a house unless two people want a massage. Charge more for the gas and travel time and use of the car. Set up a safety system to call people when you arrive and when you leave.

You can also do it at hotels in your area especially if there are high end hotels. You need to network with the concierges at places like that and tip them when they refer someone to you. Charge 2x the amount for those massages. Be available at the last minute and be able to get there asap. Build your reputation in the community. Use twitter to let people know what area you will be in that week or when you have appointments available. And yes get a website set up.

Keep track of all of your income and expenses. Set up a separate checking account. Get an accountant if you need to to do your taxes and set up paying self employement taxes etc.

It is sometimes just easier to rent an office or share an office with someone who is already established. There are many other ways you can start your business in an office setting that are really cheap too.
You do not need a tax ID to do business. You can start off as a Sole Proprietorship: This is the way these are set up - Your Name Doing Business As your business name. These are casual businesses and do not need to be formed officially. As long as you include the income on your taxes, Uncle Sam will have no problem with it.

The only draw back is that without a tax ID you'll build no business credit. Once you come to a point where your business needs loans, you can incorporate. Search sos [your state abbreviation] on google to form a corporation or Limited Liability Company and file you articles with the Secretary of State.
Definitely start with a good website! That's where a good percentage of your new clients will find you! Your site must appear at the top of the page when clients search for massage in your area. If you're not savvy on search engine optimization and keywords yourself, you could pay a comprehensive service like SiteBuildIt.com to help.

Select a theme for the web site and use it on your business cards to develop a consistent visual identity for your business. I have a red background with thumbs on either side of a spine and it's very eye catching.

Network with chiropractors, naturopaths and acupuncturists in your area who do not already have on-site massage. Offer them a free half-hour treatment and be ready to tell them how your particular massage will help their clients.

Best wishes in your new endeavors!

How do I know that a massage therapist is qualified to massage my achillis tendons and groins?

How do I determine a massage therapist's legitimacy? I have achilles tendinitis and a groin pull. I have want to run again and massage therapy might heal my injuries. I want both parts of my two legs massaged and I do not wanted to be ripped off.How do I know that a massage therapist is qualified to massage my achillis tendons and groins?
Requirements are different in different states/countries, but where I live, a massage therapist must have his/her license on display in the place where he/she practices, and anyone can request information on any therapist or any other healthcare professional from the state.

With injuries, your best bet is to either find a chiropractor with a massage therapist (many have them these days) or get a referral to physical therapy. The therapists working for chiros and PTs would be the most experienced in this line of work. How do I know that a massage therapist is qualified to massage my achillis tendons and groins?
Ask your friends or doctor for referrals. Massage is really good for tendonitis and things like that. Find a sports massage therapist or deep tissue massage therapists. Most are licensed and have training in dealing with injuries. Just ask them what their training and experience are.
Instead of going to a therapist why don't you try a Chiropractic care. If your low back pain is muscle or joint related try a Chiropractor. Chiropractors are experts in spinal anatomy and can diagnose the problem, Chiropractic management had helped me a lot.
massage is not good for tendnitis, maybe cryomassage ll help in acute stage, but any way., u r not qualified to tell if he's qualified or not, u can just meet one and ask for help and he know wha should u get and u can tell only if u feel better or not.
Ask for certificates and business permits that is if they are registered as a business.

Massage therapist looking for help choosing a new massage table, any recomendations?

I am looking for a very lightweight, portable massage table on which to do massage and reiki treatments. The oakworks advanta and wellspring look good, but are pricey. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with these two tables, or any other brands that might meet my needs. Thanks for the help!Massage therapist looking for help choosing a new massage table, any recomendations?
I know that oakworks is a good brand. There are many other good brands. If you are concerned about affordability, you may check on www.craigslist.org for your area also your local newspaper classifieds and the classified ads for any natural health magazines that are published in your area, to see if there is a used one for sale.

You can go and look at it and see how sturdy it feels. I got my massage table and massage chair used. I got a great deal on some very nice, like new products.

Good luck to you.Massage therapist looking for help choosing a new massage table, any recomendations?
I went through the same dilemma as you are. Oakworks is a good brand but it is expensive and heavy. I went out onto ebay and got an iron, light-weight portable table for $125 including shipping. It was an amazing deal and it's easy to move around.

The one I have is also what I got I massage therapy school. Earthlite is a good brand. With a massage table for use for Reiki, you want it to be solid wood and make sure it is adjustable to be as low as you want it. I would also make sure that you get a wider table: the average is 28'; and it just won't do for larger people otherwise they won't have anyplace to put their arms if lying supine. Get the most padding you can get as it makes a difference in your client's comfort level. The more comfortable your client, the more likely they will come back because they were....comfortable! lol

Having a good massage table is not something I would skimp on. As for weight, you can always purchase the table carriers with good wheels to drag it around town.
I would look to see if there are any trade shows near you. That is where manufacturers' representatives are and they can give you accurate information about the tables and make suggestions that would best meet your needs. During trade shows you are more likely to get a much better deal than just going to buy a table randomly. You also might try calling the massage table companies directly.

I hope this helps you and good luck!!
I haven't had any experience with those tables sorry, but I use a table called the EarthLite Avalon. I really like it a lot. I'm not quite sure the price because it came with my schooling. Check it out and see if you might like it. Good luck on your search for a table!

Do spas employ reflexologists/massage therapists in salaried positions or ';by the hour';?

When working in a spa setting, are reflexologists and MTs paid by the hour (a salaried position: a set amount regardless of how many clients happen to book for a particular day) or are they paid by the session (so if only 2 clients book for a particular day, the therapist is paid for those two sessions only)?Do spas employ reflexologists/massage therapists in salaried positions or ';by the hour';?
You can be a commission based employee or a independent contractor. If you are commission you get a % of the service fee. Say you get 40% on a $60 massage or if you are a independent contractor you just rent your space. That means for instance, you pay $400 for using the spa room part time. Then all the money you charge your clients is yours and you just pay the rent. Got it?Do spas employ reflexologists/massage therapists in salaried positions or ';by the hour';?
depending on the spa in question. majority of them will hire MT's per hour basis. most of these positions are part time so no need for salaried employees. if the place is big and booming then they would probably hire by salary. figure the bigger and busier the place is, you'll get salary
Usually a prorated amount or by the hour
it really depends on the salon. Call a salon and say your a student and you'd like to ask them a few questions about their establishment. Don't make the salary question the first thing you ask though.

  • Can an accomplished massage therapist give me some tips on boosting my clientele?

I'm so discouraged. I've posted on craigslist many times and alot of what I get are men who want ';happy endings'; It's painfully slow. I only get 2 maybe 3 massages a week, so what money I get goes to bills and not marketing. Any suggestions? Can an accomplished massage therapist give me some tips on boosting my clientele?
I am an acupuncturist who is building a patient base, but I think the same ideas apply. The first person to answer your question said a lot of what I was going to say, so I will just add a little bit.

    1. If you want to increase word of mouth advertising, join a network club (such as BNI or LEADS). This will give you a chance to showcase what you do and to increase your own visibility. Typically, in these clubs, you will get a chance to advertise what you do on a weekly basis, and can give occasional demonstrations. This will give you the chance to tout the health benefits of massage that so few people know about.

    2. Have a clear picture in your mind of what kinds of clients you want to treat. This sounds like it would be limiting, but it helps to distinguish you. If you like to treat athletes, you can talk about the benefits of massage therapy as a modality for reducing recovery time and lactic acid buildup. If you want to do office visits, focus on how you can increase productivity and reduce sick days for companies. There are all sorts of ways you can work with this.

    3. Take every good opportunity that you have to educate the public on what you do. There is a lot of misinformation on massage therapy. Any time you can speak the truth and dispel the myths, you will distinguish yourself as an expert and stand the chance of attracting potential clients, so bring your appointment book with you! The upside to this is it's absolutely free and allows you demonstrate and experience your joy and passion (I am actually getting paid to give a talk this month!).

I hope this helps. Good luck with everything! Can an accomplished massage therapist give me some tips on boosting my clientele?
Though not a massage therapists I'm a soon to be acupuncture student. While looking for resources on how to start a successful acupuncture business I came across a book by Kevin Doherty, L.Ac called ';Building your Dream Practices'; though its written by an acupuncturists it is designed for anyone in alternative health fields (as well as alopathic health also).

Most of everything I've read is if you have a website make sure it's designed to drawn clients in, and use it to also MAKE MONEY through residual income.

These three sites though again written by acupuncrists would be of great use for you I feel.
    1. Use your massage therapy association/insurer as a resource for marketing tips. I belong to AMTA, and I know that they provide information.

    2. Do demonstrations, for example 10 or 15 minute ';sample'; treatments at a local firehouse, business office or nursing home. Bring plenty of business cards and brochures to leave behind. Offer discounts for anyone who books because of it.

    3. Go to a local gym and ask if you can post contact information there.

    4. Get friendly with local chiropractors; see if you can create a referral network.

    5. Offer free massage as a prize in a local raffle or benefit.

    6. Give your regulars extra business cards, and ask them to recommend you to their friends.

    7. Advertise heavily around gift certificate season (Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Christmas/Hanukkah)--massages make great gifts!

    8. Most of all, do a good job with current clients: nothing beats word of mouth.
Craigslist is notoriously known for its ads promoting prostitution even though the authorities are trying to crack down on it.

You need to do something everyday to promote your business.

You need a website that gets you to the top of Google for your keywords - massage, your city.

You need to contact chiropractors and other medical providers to get referrals.

You need to do free events for charity doing chair massage.

There are literally hundreds of things you need to be doing and should be doing.

How can a massage therapist start getting referrals from hotels?

Are there any massage therapists (professional) that do outcall work at hotels? Is there a way to get referred by the concierge or do you just have to advertise and have the hotel guest find you?How can a massage therapist start getting referrals from hotels?
You got to get to know and be trusted by the concierge.

Approach all the concierge and offer a free massage to them, either goto their home or have them come to your office if you have one. They cannot recoomend you unless they know you are good.

If you get a booking from a concierge you should cut them in for 10-20 percent of what you made, just tip them on your way out. This will insure more referrals.

You can bypass the concierge by advertising in the book that most hotels put in each room. Also, you can do an ad on the in room TV network.

If a hotel has a spa it may be difficult to do all of the above so focus on hotels that dont have a spa/gym offering massage.

Tipping Massage therapists: how much? is it legal?

For a $75 massage is it appropriate to tip? I heard recently it was unethical and illegal to tip a massage therapist.

I currently tip @$12 or a little morfe if they were really good and focused on a specific problem.Tipping Massage therapists: how much? is it legal?
I worked for years in the restaurant industry and so made my living from gratutities. When I started my massage practice, I generally discouraged tipping. I would rather people be simply paying my fee and not wrack their brains on how much/if they should tip me.

A few clients still insist on tipping. I tell them its not neccessary but they seem to enjoy it so I let them.

I charge what I consider a very fair rate, considering the amount of time, energy and money I've put into doing the body therapies I do.Tipping Massage therapists: how much? is it legal?
Licensing/credentialing for massage therapists varies wildly from state to state. And in California, it varies from city to city or county to county. I'm in Washington and I never signed such an agreement. I agree it can interfere with the client/provider relationship.

Of course tipping is legal, just like tipping your waitress in a restaurant. It is only illegal the person receiving the tip, not reporting it as income.

It is very appropriate to tip; I have heard the stories from therapies/waitresses that are mad at their clients, because they felt like they have given best service ';many times'; with the same customer, and not even get as little as a ';thank you'; for it. 10% gratuity is a good start.
My bro is a massage therapist.... tipping is perfectly legal. and he loves tips, it like a thumbs up...

what is illegal is to tip a student therapist... one that hasn't got his license yet.
ive never heard it is illegal but that is good if you tip dont always tip every time you go they will get used to it. a tip is A favor or gift.

Is it normal for the massage therapist to spread your buttcheeks while massaging you?

He kept on doing this, and spent A LOT of time on the buttocks compared to other areas on my back and legs.

He took the draping off too.Is it normal for the massage therapist to spread your buttcheeks while massaging you?
Depends on the type of massage most times male therapist avoid the buttocks unless specifically requested or invited. I have some women who a regulars - more friends really, who are comfortable with complete contact with buttocks or breasts and several who don't want draping, but this is very individual. Obviously with such clients I see their body very intimately including their most private places but there is a trust that has been built up - a comfort level between us.

    Unless you specifically want or enjoy this then you should have spoken up and firmly said. ';That is a little too intimate for me!';

He may have been making an advance and your silence encouraged him if so very unprofessional and very out of character for most therapists. I would not likely seek a repeat massage. Is it normal for the massage therapist to spread your buttcheeks while massaging you?
I've never been there, nor done that, but I do know that there are a whole lot more muscles in the human body, large ones too, that a masseuse could focus on that would give you relaxation, rather than that. If that ever happens again, I personally would tell the person to skip that part...although I'd have jumped up and kicked him in the kneecaps for taking the drape off! Unlike the feet and hands, I have never heard of the buttocks having any great connection to the nerves that ring bells in our heads. If that were the case, we'd all have pain in the butts, huh?
Only in Chinese Qi massage. The buttocks is one of the largest muscles in the body and yes, i have a female chinese therapist and im female and she does it to me . I know she is not gay because she is married. Im always thinking...she is looking at my bunghole...why...?

Also ive been to many other chinese massage therapists whos art is known as qi gong and it is normal for them to do that.
Well the drapinq is there for a reason . It shouldn't have been removed . But maybe this qirl down there has a point . It could be Qi or whatever . But find out , and if not , report it to someone .
Absolutely not! You need to alert the authorities immediately. That's boarder line sexual assault.
Eh thats a definit no its not normal! This sounds serious to me.
This is not all right what so ever..this sounds like a sexual miss conduct..which im sure y\that therapist can get into big trouble.
that sounds weird. report him...and get a female next time...

    Massage therapists help please?

I am studying massage and need tools to help me remember the bones and muscles of the body. Any suggestions or little tricks?Massage therapists help please?
I teach A%26amp;P at a massage school. What I try to do is to provide as many memory aids as possible, and many students like the use of flashcards. Muscles and bones are pure mechanical memory so the more time you spend going over it, the better it will stick. The massage board exams like questions on muscles so it is important you know them before going to take the test. I will give you one memory aid I like. Take the Musculocutaneous nerve. This nerve innervates only the BBC muscles. Easy to remember BBC because of the british broadcasting company. The muscles are, Biceps Brachii, Bracialis, and Coracobrachialis. Or if you want to remember the action of the muscle Brachioradialis, the action is just like bringing a can of budweiser to your mouth hence this is the ';beerdrinking muscle';. Stuff like this will aid in your learning.Massage therapists help please?
This is a fun and easy way we learned in school-use washable markers and draw the muscles on the teacher or teaching assistant! We had a blast doing this, or the flash cards work great too! Don't forget to read out loud, that really helps. Have fun with this, massage is becoming very popular.
    Are you a cop?
I am a massage therapist, I would suggest drawing pictures and when you praticing massage visualize it.
Locate the muscles on your own BODY.

It will be with you at the exam!

    Good luck!

As a massage therapist why is it important to know what orangelles do, ex ribosomes?

I am doing an assignment and im stumped. I just need some suggestions. As a massage therapist why is it important to know what orangelles do, ex ribosomes?
From your question, I'm not sure if you are questioning the justification of learning certain information for schooling, or as part of an assignment, you have been challenged to contemplate why an MT may need to know these things; but here it goes...

In a theoretical sense, understanding and respecting the basic structure of cells is a good foundation to knowing that there is an organizational hierarchy; that there is more to learn, and you have a base of directional reference to know where to look for additional information.

In a practical sense, a massage therapist will not specifically need to pay attention to an affective change that your work will or will not provide to an organelle or ribosome, however, it does lay a foundation for additional research if at some point you become overwhelmingly bored of just doing basic massage over the next few years.

Understanding that there is a breakdown of more and more organizational components to soft-tissue - which you are learning how to manipulate - there may be some point down the road where you remember a nice, colorful depiction of an organelle in a textbook (you maybe thought was worthless way back when) that shows a bunch of stuff in it, and it said something about 'ribosomes are important in translating amino acids into properly formed proteins,' which of course are used in developing and maintaining the soft-tissue structures that you will be working with on a daily basis.

It may be then that you realize, ';Hey, I'm kind of glad that I was at least exposed to that information, because now I have a general reference of understanding to work with as I contemplate the physiological changes that I am actually imposing on my clients and patients on a daily basis.'; It is then that you might also appreciate the fact that massage is more than just working-in a bunch of lotion and oil into somebody's skin because they say it feels good.

    You are in just the beginning stages of learning a time tested skill of legitimate health care without the use of machines or potions. And, as our scientific research catches up to ';legitimize'; its existence in our health care system, the focus of some of that research may very well be entitled, ';Deep Friction Manual Therapy Hastens Ribosomal Activity, Leading to Faster Protein Development and Quicker Recovery from Soft-tissue Injury.';

It may just be sensless schooling right now, but it is only a small portion of a much bigger picture at this point. I can only hope this helps in considering a different point of view. And, be stumped no more....As a massage therapist why is it important to know what orangelles do, ex ribosomes?
Maybe I just need to know more about massage therapy, but as an Anatomy instructor, I don't see how knowing about organelles specifically is necessary for a massage therapist. Tissues, yes. Bones, yes. Muscles, yes. These are structures you encounter in your job that are above the cellular level, though.

Organelles? I'm stumped, too. The only thing I can think of is that you need/are required to have a thorough background in basic science, and this info falls into that category. What does your teacher say?
In the practice of massage therapy, you will never make use of knowledge of organelles, but that knowledge will allow you to torment your client with a continuous stream of mind numbing trivia.

This knowlege is similar to the study of thermodynamics by civil engineering students. SOMEBODY thinks they should know something about it, but in 33 years of practice, it has done nothing for me.
if your a massage therapist you should know this stuff

Do massage therapists usually massage your buttocks during a session?

Yes! This means the massage therapist is competent. The Gluteous Maximus, Medius, Minimus are major problem areas affecting the low back and legs. When massaged with deep tissue kneading and releasing the affect is positive for the lower extremities. There are so many areas missed by the select inexperienced therapists that those patients that get a thorough massage benefit the most.Do massage therapists usually massage your buttocks during a session?
Yes they do. I've had a few massages and they get almost sexual with all that rubbing but it's what they do. And it feels good!

You have muscles in your but cheeks so they need massaging too! Tell them don't spend too much time on one cheek or the other one will get jealous!Do massage therapists usually massage your buttocks during a session?
    If they like you, yes.
if you like one, ask them to massage and enjoy it.

if you don't like, but the therapist force on you, just fart, then see they will not dare do it again.
when i have gotten a massage, they always ask if its ok to massage my butt first. it feels awesome tho
    yes.........
Yes they do but if ti makes you feel too uncomfortable you should say so and they should respect your wishes and avoid that area.

Remember you are paying so you tell them what areas you want them to work on.
    yes
yeah, but if they reach btwn your in trouble...unless you like that
damn. I got ripped off. The last time I went for a massage, the guy didn't massage my a-ss.

    What a jerk.

    I paid good money, too.

Oh wait, he did massage my extreme lower back.

I would say you should sort that out up front! Make sure you get your money's worth.

Maybe you could do a trade-off and make him do extra work on your feet. Especially if you have the massage after a day of walking around and your feet are nasty and smelly. In that case, he shouldn't have to massage your a-ss.
Yes, it shouldn't be erotic in any way. There are crucial pressure points located in the buttocks that affect different points in your body.
If you dont mind it they usually do. it does not feel too bad either
I do. But I also ask the person if they are comfortable with having their glutes massaged first. I also work through a drape or a towel.
    No

Massage therapists, I have to go to school while doing massage. Should I get day or night classes?

Weekday night are generally busier for the massage industry (everyone is getting off work and wants a last minute appointment).

Try to get day classes so you can focus your energy on that.

Saturday and Sunday before 4pm are great money making days as well. So try to take all your classes during the weekdays and maybe take a couple nights off work and work a lot of hours during the weekend.Massage therapists, I have to go to school while doing massage. Should I get day or night classes?
I studied massage at night while working full time day shift. At the end of most massage classes the last thing you will feel like doing is going to work. You will want to go home and sleep.

This is especially true for people who go from receiving little massage to receiving massage every day. Your body will cry out for more sleep and it is not unusual to feel sick and tired MORE OFTEN when you start a massage course. As a former massage teacher I saw this all the time.

Good Luck.Massage therapists, I have to go to school while doing massage. Should I get day or night classes?
If you are planning on working while going to school then I would go at night so you could work during the day. But if you aren't gonna work then go in the day. I went to school for over a year at night while working full time, its hard but worth it in the end.
If you really want to be a good Massage Therapist, the first thing you might consider is that cigarette!! Yuk!!

It really is about your schedule, you can make your body adjust to anything for a short time, especially with the benefits of getting massage. The right education is more important than the time-slot and how you will adjust given what you have to work with.. and how hard you are willing to work at it..

What do massage therapists think about whe they give a massage?

    That is a good question.

Do they wonder if they will get a good tip...or do they crush on their client...do they focus on the flaws on their body...or do they think about something unrelated? What do massage therapists think about whe they give a massage?
I know a girl who use to be a massage therapist and she had some horror stories. She would tell me that sometimes her clients would get so relaxed that they would end up passing gas, while she was massaging them! So, after that all she could think about was are they gonna fart? What do massage therapists think about whe they give a massage?
I hope that it's not too small when it comes time for the ';Happy Ending';.
most message therapist just want to get the whole thing over with..giving massage is fun when you give one or get one from a b/f or g/f but when you do this for money you only want to do what you have to ..and yes they think about a nice tip..would not you? this is how they make a living...

I had a massage girl get mad at me when I told her how easy she has it...she said that lots of people smell bad and have grease skin..pimples on their backs..blackheads too...

some people would break wind when they pushed down on them...fat people? the funniest thing I heard her say..was they old men had skin like a ten year old snake...now does this sound very romantic? this is why they like to play music and burn incense..to mask the smell and the sounds of their clients
They think whatever they want to. I would hope they were concentrating on the job at hand.
