I have my BA in Communications, but with the job market....it's not getting me anywhere. I have always, always, loved aesthetics/makeup artistry/massage. Should I go for it and select a good school for this.....or is it hard to find a good job once you are finished with the programs? Real experience will help me. Thanks. What is the market like for licensed estheticians/massage therapists?
So massage would be your second career - not at all unusual for massage therapists.
You are citing a number of different fields. Aesthetics may have some involvement with makeup but neither have any relationship to massage training. I'm a massage therapist, I really don't know much about the other two.
Personally, I loved going to massage school and I love what I do for work. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of time to develop a client base as a massage therapist. If you work for someone else, they collect part of the profits. Some places seem to add massage as almost an afterthought. Massage therapists don't usually get paid unless they are doing a massage.
Yes, it is possible to make a good living as a massage therapist. It is a career of $300 days and $30 weeks. If you love what you do, it's worth it.
Another thought - the economy will improve sooner or later. Many of us are in the same situation. If you like communications, you can look for other related classes, degrees, and certifications while waiting for the job market and economy. If you think you want to be a massage therapist it would be a good time to check out possibilities. Hopefully, by the time that you finish the program (6 months to 2 years) people will have stable jobs again.
Feel free to talk with other massage therapists about the work. Most of us love to talk with people interested in what we do.
