Most massage therapists start their own business because you can make more that way. You can get jobs that are either commission or salary or hourly based -but most are really low paying. You can create or find higher paying jobs if you know how to get a job.

Being a massage therapists isn't about getting a job. It is more of a lifestyle choice and requires that you have strong personal and professional boundaries and communication skills. Massage Envy is one of the largest employers of massage therapists and they only pay $15 an hour. The rest is made up in tips if you can get them and know what you are doing and know how to educate clients.Do massage therapists make good money?
I am not a massage therapist but have several friends that are. They all have been doing it for years and are now 40+ in age. Currently only 1 out of the 5 are working. (Economy slows down=no extra money for massages). 2 of th 5 are starting to have hand problems. They are in constant pain from arthritis. When most of them worked they got paid per client, and were encouraged to sell products from the spa. One of them didn't sell enough and was fired for it. Some of them would be called in at the last minute, so they could never make definite plans.

So that's what I know.
You should google it.

  1. Massage Therapists at Massage Envy, the largest provider of therapeutic massages in the world, earn between $25-$35 per 50 minute hands on massages in most states & more is some states like California, New York, New Jersey, etc. where democrats & labor unions control things & the cost of living is MUCH greater than most of America.
Many therapists at Massage Envy have already bought into then given up on the fantasy that massage schools use to attract students: work for yourself, make all of the money you want to, if you feel like working today do so, and if not just roll over & go back to sleep. After all you work for yourself! That's why thousands & thousands of massage therapists are no longer working in the profession: they found it impossible to me a professional advertising, marketing, scheduling, traveling, and massage therapist all at the same time by trying to do it on their own. Or, they went to work at a spa that seemed to pay well but they only got paid when they were giving someone a massage & they could perform more massages in a day at a Massage Envy clinic that they were able do in a week at the overpriced spa.
Massage Envy is not for everyone and every therapist is not for Massage Envy. But for thousands of massage therapists it's a pretty good place to do just what they want to do: give great massages & leave the advertising, marketing, paying rent, making appointments, collecting bad checks, buying all of the supplies, etc. to someone else.
