Does this factor make men less successful massage therapists. Are male massage therapists less sucessful than female massage therapists?
If you are a male massage therapist in Utah right now you have a definite disadvantage. A few day spas were in the news last week with accusations of sexual assault. Even prior to that I think as a male therapist you do have a disadvantage because of the issues that you stated. Are male massage therapists less sucessful than female massage therapists?
Unfortunately I think that men massage therapists do have a disadvantage due to a few unsavory ones. Every time I have ever read about a massage therapist being investigated it is a male one, and unfortunately these select few give all of you a bad name. I have read very few times that a women has been mentioned and even then most people I have talked to shrugged it off as a guy reading the wrong signals of the massage therapist, but when it is a male massage therapist they are automatically guilty.
The bonus is that once clients come in to see you, if you are good at what you do, it will not make a difference. Try to find a place where they schedule your appointments for you so you can build up a practice then go out on your own.
I personally prefer male therapists because they are stronger than most women therapists.
Good luck to you.
I disagree with the male disadvantage. I have discovered over the years that male therapists have the advantage when people are seeking heavier pressure, deep tissue and/or sports massage sessions. It seems as though people have preformulated an idea that a guy can deliver a heavier massage session, in general, better than a female. I personally recognize that this is not true in all circumstances, but it seems we are talking generalities here anyway. As a male in a female dominated profession, I find it more advantageous that there are fewer of us. I have come across a significant number of people who have been seeking a ';good male massage therapist'; for months or years. Since the medical physician, athletic training and personal training professions seem to be dominated by males, it seems as though clients and patients expect a lot of answers from me once I begin working with them. I can't say that I can retire early on all the earnings from people seeking a male massage therapist, but I have been able to live comfortably in an upper middle-class neighborhood for several years, with all indications that business will sustain and even grow over the next several years...
We are all dealt a hand to play. You just need to figure out how to create an advantage rather than defeat yourself with disadvantages.
when i first started massaging i had setup my table at home in a spare room. When family friends would come over they would often see the table and ask about it. My mum would say ';yeah he is doing massage if you ever want one....'; and a few male people would say something like ';oh, no, not with a guy....';
once i setup in proper location i think 90% of clients were women and only 10% male. Obviously this will be completely different for every person due to location etc but just saying what it was like for me.
I work with a masseur now (i no longer offer massage ) and she gets 40% men 60% women and far more bookings than i ever did.
Having said that, i studied with a lot of guys and have heard they have setup really successful clinics incorporating massage so it's certainly possible. if you have an interest in being a tactile therapist and are male don't worry...follow your dream and go for it.
No. I don't believe it.
You are a ';business';. So the best way to protect yourself is to have an attorney draw up a form for clients to sign. (consult an attorney)
Also have a video in progress. They make very small cameras nowadays...tiny.
Just make sure that you have posted that video monitoring is on the premises or in the office, then it's legal.
Good luck.
As a male massage therapist, I know first hand, it is very hard to make it as a male. The ladies don't trust you, the men think they will turn gay.
Female therapists have huge advantage. Now, before I get all the thumbs down. I am not saying being a female therapist is easy. I'm sure the ladies have trouble was guys asking for the ';happy ending'; and all the stuff like that.
Take a look

It is not so much the therapists ';fault'; as it is the ';massage parlor'; mentality of a large percentage of the potential female clientele that I have come across.
First of all, let me make this perfectly clear...I am NOT denigrating women in any way shape or form, and unfortunately there have been many women who HAVE been abused by men (which should not have happened and there is no excuse for happening), which, in my opinion, is where a lot of the mistrust of male therapists comes into play.
When I had worked as an MT in a spa/salon, and a brand new potential female client has the choice of a male vs a female therapist, more often than not, a female therapist is chosen.
When I have been the ';only'; MT available, and I work on a reticent female client for the first time, she invariably becomes a ';regular'; client of mine.
So, ';long story/short';, it is my considered opinion, that if the misunderstandings or misperceptions that many women have about male MTs can be dispelled by reputable male MTs and/or education about the subject, it would make the experience more pleasurable for all involved.
I am a female massage therapist and no I don't think so!
I have worked along male therapists in Day Spas and some people prefer the male as they are stonger.
It really depends on the nature of the male and if you are really confident about what you do, it shouldn't be a problem!!
Good Luck
I don't think so! It is a kind of career to be a massage therapists.Such as doctor, police etc.Skill is the most important! And I make many friends in a web site called PubSpa.com.Most of them told me they do not mind male or female.some of them said male massage therapists are more skillful.Besides,in this web site you can meet friends who have same interest in beauty care, massage, wellness and spa treatment. You can also share blog, video, game, photos, etc with people from all over the world. And this site is totally free.
