I am an Licensed Massage Therapist. Yes, it is common. It happens all the time. Some common warning signs are :
1. Giving gifts to the therapist
2. Needing/demanding extra time on the table
3. Buying products you may be selling to please you
4. Calling you at home
5. Wanting to date you or become socially connected to you or having a crush on you
6. Wanting an extremely reduced rate (they want you to show them that you think they are special and deserving.)
7. Discussing personal issues with you ( you are only qualified to do massage)
8. Client idealizes you, think you are the authority on massage and healing
9. Not being able to tell you what they really want as far as pressure, room temperature, music or whatever.
10. Expressing more affection than you feel comfortable with
11. Sexual advances direct or indirect
12. Not wanting to offend you
The only way to handle these sitiuations is by maintaining the Professional Therapuedic Relationship, possibly with Peer-Supervision.Is it possible or even common for massage therapists to experience transference or counter transference?
Yes it happens and it begins from the minute someone even thinks about calling you for a massage. Is it possible or even common for massage therapists to experience transference or counter transference?
It is possible for transference or counter. It happens more than some want to admit,
